Welsh Storytelling Forum

The Society for Storytelling Directors were invited to a meeting of the Forum’s Steering Committee at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff on Saturday 26th April. We were able to answer a host of questions relating to how the SfS was set up and what pitfalls we could warn them about. In the evening we were treated to an event exploring the diversity of the Welsh storytelling scene, from traditional tale telling to performance art, and highlighting the multicultural nature of modern Cardiff.

World Storytelling Day
World Storytelling Day (March 20th) is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated every year on the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere, the first day of autumn equinox in the southern. On World Storytelling Day, as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible, during the same day and night.

Festival At The Edge
As some of you may be aware, Festival at the Edge has recently lost its regular funding from Arts Council England, as have 196 other organisations. Obviously this news has come as a great disappointment to all connected with the festival. Despite the costs of last years floods, and our loss of funding, Festival ‘08 will definitely be taking place (see artists appearing on the website http://www.festivalattheedge.org) with the usual mix of great performers, an exciting children’s programme, craft stalls, and of course the CAMRA bar.

Young Storyteller of the Year
Young Tongues storytelling competition took place on March 8th in Birmingham. The judges were storytellers Hugh Lupton and Jan Blake for the over 18s and Rona Barbour joined them for the judging of the 15-18s.
Fiona Collins, the event organiser said, ‘We were delighted by the success of the day and received many positive comments from audience and competitors alike.
